Diversity Interview By Integrating A Classmate Essay

I decided to complete the Diversity Interview by utilizing a classmate that I have worked with on several occasions. The work we performed together has always been professional; we have never had discussions that delved deep into each other’s backgrounds. This person is of the opposite sex and is visibly a different ethnic group from myself. I am an American- African male and she is an American – Mexican/Irish. This interview is being done in order for me to understand what it is like to be in her â€Å"skin†. During the interview I asked questions about ethnicity, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. The person I interviewed moved around often, but was born in Montclair, CA. She stated that it was fairly peaceful growing up in the area that she lived in. Having the opportunity to go outside and play with children from different backgrounds was a great experience, but it was mostly kids of Latin decent. The interviewee then moved from Montclair , CA to Ontario , CA when she was 5 years old. The move was not a problem for her because she moved to another area that was predominately kids of Latin decent , whom she got along with very well. Moving to Glendora, CA for elementary school was where she had the opportunity to interact with a more diverse group of peers. She was a mixed child and so often received questions about what she was, referring to her ethnic background. The interviewee visibly looks like she is of European decent but associated with students who were Latino,Show MoreRelatedBeing Exposed To A Culture Of Power That Is Different From1638 Words   |  7 Pagesuncomfo rtable being able to express my values, views, culture, race, etc. Being a female is often difficult due to double standards and presumptions but personally I have not been targeted because of my gender. Comparing Lil Timmy And Lil - 1274 Words

Beep! Beep! Beep! That’s the first noise Lil Timmy heard as he had to wake up for school. â€Å"Man I wish my school would just let Halloween not be a school day† Timmy said. Later Lil Timmy starts walking to school and to meet his best friend, Lil Jimmy. â€Å"Hey are you going to the Halloween party tonight?†asks Jimmy. â€Å"Yea I ll come,† says Timmy. At 8:00 pm they both dress as their favorite superhero. After 10 minutes of walking they showed up. Lil Timmy and Lil Jimmy were the party animal type. After 3 hours, the party started dying down and everybody started walking home. Both Timmy and Jimmy asked their parents if they could stay at their friend s house for the night which was where the party was at. They said yes so Timmy and Jimmy†¦show more content†¦Every step the boys took it was like a firecracker going off. They couldn t stay quiet due to all of the broken glass and debris on the floor. But Lil Timmy said, â€Å"Ha, Ha, guys very funny† very sarcastically and knew what was going on. Then a high-pitched scream was heard. Once Lil Timmy heard that, it sent a chill running up and down his spine and goosebumps all over his body, his arms, his hands, and even his scalp. His blood was starting to turn cold once more and lil Timmy started to get worried and shined his flashlight, in the distance he sees Lil Timmy and Young Bob running from a black horse with red-devilish looking eyes. Lil Timmy was in a paralyzed state, he couldn t move a single muscle in his body, he couldn t even blink. Finally Bobby and Jimmy caught up to Timmy and were desperate for air. But the horse was charging head-on. The three boys ducked down and the horse jumped over them, leaving a trail of a mysterious green gas substance. Lil Timmy, Lil Jimmy, and Young Bob took one sniff and all of the sudden they’re all on different floors of the asylum. Baroque Mexican Music Concert Report free essay sample

The concert in a whole was a very soothing to me because when I went there I was ere hyper and tense, but as the pieces were being played out, I became very relaxed and sleepy. This concert was a little different because in the beginning, the conductor went through a lecture of the Mexican baroque period. After he went through all of the material, they sang 5 songs and left. It was very Interesting to learn about the music as it was heard and I think this is a very effective way to teach people about music and let them learn through personal interaction. Most of the songs were sang mostly by the higher pitched singers so It made us very sleepy. I had to wake up my friend who came with me because he was snoring! The first piece that was played was Beats IVR with Brian Gloss as the cantor. At the end of the performance, the 2 cantors were given special recognition because of their remarkable presentation. In Beats IVR, It started with both guys and girls singing, and ended in jus guys singing. The melody of this tune began slow and then got faster and faster as it progressed. There was a wide array in the dynamic of the piece. Sometimes they would be singing softly, then abruptly they would all get loud all together and that added to the variability which is essential to musical piece. Also, In the first two pieces, Including this one, one person one sing (the cantor) and then everybody would sing after he did one line. The second piece they sang was In Invention Seance Crisis, with Ryan Matthew Hadley as the cantor. Just like the first piece, the cantor would sing a few lines, then everybody would Join In and sing together. All of these pieces were sung In Mexican o it was very hard to understand what meaning they were trying to get through to the audience. They did not sing very loud throughout this piece and the melody was a little bit fast. The third piece that was played was Pang Lingua. This song reminds me of when I am in church. Everyone sings loud and there is no one person that sings first and is followed. There is a lot of confusion in this song because everyone is singing something different and they are all very loud. I did not like this piece for that reason. I dont know If that Is how Its supposed to be played, but I think It would have sounded better if only some people sang loud and other people sang soft so the attention could be focused on the people singing loud. The fourth piece played was Knobs Dates. The third and fourth pieces, the scants flumes was the same. Scants firms Is the pre-existing melody taken from the chant piece. However, the scants firms In the third piece was sang by the tenors and the scants flumes in the fourth pieces was sang by the soprano part. Both of 1 OFF abrupt. This is when my friend woke up from his short-lived nap. The fifth and last piece played was Even Creator Spirits. In this song, the pitch Mould go up, down, down again and then back up. This one was very soothing like the first two and had no cantor. One thing I also noticed was that one person would play a note on a harmonica before every song, and I reasoned that he did that was to make sure everyone was in tune. Overall, the conductor told us a lot about the history of this type of music. There Mere many composers from back then who made this music such as: Pedro Bermuda, Gasper Fernando, and Francisco Athenian. This type of music was important religious service in the Baroque period. These verses where homophobic, lust like the pieces they sang, and they were usually chanted by men. The chant Mould be the basis of the melody. This music is very old and usually when they transcribe this music, errors are made in copying. These errors in copying caused problems in harmony. I learned from this concert to not only listen to big orchestras, but also different choral groups because their talent is greatly appreciated when they can sing efferent languages and sing them effectively. If they were to perform again, however, I think I wouldnt go see them play only because I do not like baroque music as much as I thought I would and I rather enjoy music with a large orchestra. This Nas my first baroque concert and it wont be my last. I do appreciate baroque music more than I used to by attending this concert though. Next time I go to a concert, I Mould really like to hear some instruments accompanied with the vocals. Other than that, this concert was a great experience for me.

With regard to financing my education, I intend to pay part of the tuition and living expenses from my parent’s contribution. I also p lan to apply for financial aid from the university and from state sources. This financial assistance will be in form of scholarships and grants. To fulfill the scholarship and grants requirements, I will have to maintain a full-time enrollment and a 12 credit/semester during my undergraduate studies. I also plan to apply for grants to finance my education and be optimistic that the donors will be able to give me some money. I understand that their monies are awarded based on needs but this will not deter me from trying my luck. With regard to scholarships, I intend to give UNLV online admissions my best shot. buy custom The United States essay

buy custom The United States essay United States was a democratic country with open society and based on freedom of an individual. It was an open society that was protected by laws as it was defined by the constitution of the United States. At the same time, market mechanism that was based on American society, allowed individuals or private firms, to engage in free trade or exchange without interferences from government authority arbitrary actions. This resulted to various conflicts like the conflict between the open society, social values and market values. This was covered up during the era of President Ronald Reagans presidency in 1980s. People elected their representatives in United States to represent them at various levers of power. Those representatives were supposed to represent the peoples interest but contrary, they put their interest ahead mainly due to money and the capitalism effect as they tried to maximize on the amount of profits that got into their pockets. This is how the capitalism and issues to do with money affected the social welfare of the people and the public interest. This generally brought conflict between the public and private interest. In United States, the political process was supposed to serve interest of the common people but this changed with time. In Americas politics, capitalism hijacked the interest of politicians to help the society; instead they served their own interests. The elected representatives were beholden by their election financers and not electorate interests. This brought conflict between the society and the whole idea behind the capitalism. That conflict was extended even to social sector where few rich people target was to make profits through social amenities. This was due to special interest people were putting on their priorities. Although a lot was being done by the United States government, the overall winner was few individuals who were continuing to gain. They were gaining more and more profits making a lot people to join the idea behind serving their own interest. In Britain, mercantilism reduced in mid-18th century when an economic theorist group led by Adam Smith, challenged the doctrines of mercantilist in believing that the wealth of the world was to remain constant. They went ahead to say that the state would increase its wealth on expense of another. In mid 18th century, there rose industrial capitalism which was made possible by accumulation of huge amount of capital, that was under the merchant phase of capitalism and its investment in the machinery. The industrial capitalism which is dated from 18th century signified the start of the systems of manufacturing development, complex labor division within the work process and the global domination of capitalism production mode. The resulted industrial revolution was the merchant being replaced by industrialist, who became dominant in capitalist system. This made a declination of the traditional handicraft skills of the artisans, journeymen and the guilds. Also in this era, capitalism marke d the change of relations between peasants and the British landowning gentry. This transformation gave rise to cash crop production mainly for market rather than for subsistence use. There was increased agriculture mechanization which was mainly encouraged by the surplus generated by commercial agriculture rise in Britain. Another major change that resulted due to rise of industrial capitalism was the decline of mercantilism. In Mid to late 19th century, Britain was broadly considered as the typical case of laissez faire capitalism which gained a lot of favor over mercantilism in 1840s in Britain. In same years, there was a repeal of the com laws and navigation Acts, these were in line with the teachings of Adam Smith and David Ricardo who were classical political economists. Britain embraced liberalism where it encouraged competition and market economy development. Buy custom The United States essay

Drugs History And Definition Essays - Opioids, Euphoriants, Morphine

Drugs History And Definition Essays - Opioids, Euphoriants, Morphine Drugs History And Definition History / Definition Drugs have a long and notorious history for altering minds. Drugs are used as a way of escaping reality and disappearing into another world. In this speech, I will assist you in understanding the history and definitions of various drugs. My proposed findings are based upon information I have gathered from a variety of what I believed to be reputable and credible sources. Therefore, according to Professor Blum, from the University of Chicago the original home of cannabis is thought to be Central Asia, but has spread around the globe with the exception of the Arctic regions and areas of wet tropical forests. Early in its historythe Chinese undoubtedly used it as a hallucinogen. 1500 years later when they had their first contact with Europeans the drug had fallen into decline. However, its value had become a primary source of fiber and there is record of hemp cultivation dating back to Neolithic times. The United States declared marijuana as an illegal drug in 1937. It has been a source of great controversy ever since. Another popular drug widely used in the United States is cocaine. Cocaine is extracted from the leaves of a plant called E-Coca. E-Coca, a bushy shrub native to South American countries at high altitudes. Cocaine is the primary alkaloid in these leaves. In addition, Sigmund Freud, the famous psychoanalyst, used cocaine to treat many of his patients, later he himself became an addict. Cocaine was found to have a numbing effect, therefore it was introduced as an anesthetic by Carl Koller. Cocaine use fell off for various reasons, before it reemerged in the late 1970s. Though touted as the perfect drug, it has ruined many lives. Next, lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as (LSD) was created in 1943 by Albert Hofmann. This drug gained huge popularity in the 1960s. Hofmanns description of his experience while testing the drug was a pleasant intoxication-like feeling that extremely stimulated his imagination. His experience of uninterrupted stream of pictures, extraordinary shapes with kaleidoscopic play of colors lasted about six hours. Later, LSD was extensively studied by the military in the 1950s and finally outlawed in 1967. Other common drugs that are different in name but similar in origin are opium and heroin. Opium is thought to be 6000 years old, where heroin was created in 1874 and was originally marketed as a safe, non-addicted substitute for morphine. However, it was quickly noted that heroin also produce dependency very quickly in some individuals. Because of that, heroin and opiates were made illegal in 1920 with the dangerous drugs act. Phencyclidine commonly known as (PCP) was developed in 1926 as a surgical anesthetic. Its developers hoped it would prove safe and effective, but early researchers decided it is not much of neither and it sat on a shelf until 1957. This drug is currently illegal in the United States as well. Lastly, there is the drug labeled amphetamine. Amphetamines are divided into three basic groupsmethamphetamine, dexamphetamines, and Benzedrine. These drugs are commonly known as speed, meth, crank, crystal, and ice. In 1887, they were synthesized in Germanyin search of curing disease. In the late 1920s, the drug was seriously investigated as a cure and treatment against nearly everything from depression to decongestion. Today these drugs are generally used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder also known as (ADHD). In closing of my speech, I would like to quote Dr. Alfred Burger from the New England Journal of Medicine by stating, Drugs are chemical compounds that modify the way the body and mind work. Additionally, the word drug has acquired bad connotations in recent years due to the fact that society takes something good and turns into something bad, this has ultimately become a serious sociological problem. Critical Thinking Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 8

Critical Thinking - Essay Example Excessive bureaucracy demotivates employees because set regulations affect creativity. Employees in a bureaucratic organisation execute their specific tasks as directed by their managers. At times, employees are right regarding a certain work, but their employers insists that they continue with their tasks without any alteration. This restriction prevents employees from developing other measures of executing the tasks consequently minimizing employee’s creativity. Additionally, this restriction tends to demotivate employees largely because they feel that the organisation does not support their noble ideas that are beneficial towards accomplishment of various tasks. Additionally, the hierarchical authority associated with bureaucracy implies that employees lack the capacity to share their personal views towards decision-making because of the set up (Daft & Marcic, 2006). There is a high probability of killing ideas because they originate from the wrong individual. Consequently, ideas may gain support because they originate from the top management. Additionally, there is a perception that the management is always right This situation makes employees feel that the management distorts data to ensure that performance looks better, though it is not. Additionally, there is interference of internal communications among employees with the intention of reflecting what the organisation wants to be as opposed to what it really is. The overall effect is denial that leads to mistakes within an organisation. There is a tendency of the management to deny responsibilities for these mistakes or failures and may opt to blame some employees (Daft & Marcic, 2006). Additionally, the perceived desires of the management determine decision-making instead of involving employees. This approach makes the top management insulated from reality. Consequently, they opt to
